Our Process

A Professional, Proven Brokerage Process from Start to Finish

At Boat Brokers of Tennessee, we believe the buying and selling process should be as smooth, honest, and efficient as possible. Whether you are looking to sell a boat or purchase one, our process is built around trust, transparency, and results.

We are not a high-volume dealership moving inventory as fast as possible.

Instead, we operate on a selective brokerage model, representing only boats that meet our high standards. Our commission is fifteen percent of the final sale price. That means we are motivated to list only boats we are confident in—and to sell them for their fair market value.

We have been doing this for decades. Our process reflects the experience and professionalism that has made us one of the most trusted names in boat brokerage throughout Tennessee and the surrounding region.

Step One – Initial Contact and Boat Evaluation

For Sellers:

The first step is a conversation. If you are interested in selling your boat, you can contact us by phone or email to begin the process. We will gather basic information about your vessel—make, model, year, condition, slip location, service history, and any upgrades or issues.

If your boat is in a marina, we will ask about the status of the slip and whether it might be available to a new owner. Boats already docked and in the water are often easier to sell and show.

Once we have the basics, we will schedule an in-person inspection and assessment to determine whether your boat qualifies for listing.

Step Two – Certified Mechanical Inspection

We do not list any boat that has not been professionally evaluated. A certified marine mechanic conducts a full inspection of every boat we represent. This includes:

  • Engine performance and diagnostics
  • Electrical systems and battery testing
  • Steering and controls
  • Hull and structure integrity
  • Safety systems and general functionality
  • Seller is responsible for a certified mechanical inspection through Boat Brokers of TN, and for any potential repairs that may be needed.

The results of this inspection are documented and shared with potential buyers. This transparency builds trust and eliminates surprises.

If any issues are discovered, we will advise you on necessary repairs or whether the boat should be listed as-is, depending on severity.

Step Three – Listing and Presentation

Once your boat passes inspection and is approved for listing, we move forward with creating a professional presentation. This includes:

  • High-quality photos of the interior and exterior
(All seller photos can be helpful)
  • Detailed listing of features and specifications
(Seller, please provide a listing of all manufacturer-installed features/specifications and any additional upgrades to the boat.)
  • Information about slip availability
  • Pricing strategy based on market data and conditions

Boats may be displayed in the water if they are already docked at a marina.

Step Four – Buyer Inquiry, Showings, and Test Drives

For Buyers:
When buyers contact us about a specific boat, we guide them through the condition summary, pricing, and next steps. Most of our showings are by appointment, allowing us to provide one-on-one service and ensure boats are ready to view.

When boats are docked in water, we often offer test drives so buyers can experience the boat's performance firsthand. This is especially helpful for larger cruisers, pontoons, and tow boats. We coordinate all logistics for safe and efficient test drives.

For Sellers:
As the broker, we need to have access to all keys for boats, trailers, and boat lifts. Also, we will need boat registrations and titles if applicable. We handle all inquiries, walk-throughs, and test drives. You do not need to be present. Our team ensures your boat is shown professionally and respectfully.

Step Five – Offers, Sale, and Transaction Completion

Once a buyer is ready to move forward, we assist with the negotiation and documentation. We handle all aspects of the sale process, including:

  • Preparing sales agreements
  • Ensuring all legal documentation is in order
  • Coordinating with marinas for potential slip transfer
  • Scheduling the final walkthrough or delivery
  • Managing payment collection, registration, and title transfer

The seller is responsible for the cost of the certified technician inspection and any necessary repairs. Payment for the inspection and any required repairs is due immediately upon completion. An estimate will be provided in advance for the seller’s approval before any work is completed. Because we operate on a fifteen percent commission of the actual selling price, there are no additional upfront costs for sellers aside from the certified technician inspection and any required repairs. We only get paid when your boat sells, which keeps our interests aligned with yours from beginning to end.

What Happens After the Sale

For Buyers:
We remain available for post-sale support, such as coordinating with marina staff, answering questions about the inspection report, or providing local service referrals.

For Sellers:
Once the transaction is complete and the buyer has taken possession, our team ensures all required documents are properly filed and distributed. We also notify the marina, if applicable, to close out the slip or facilitate rental transfer.
